History of the Trolleybus

The trolleybus can be dated back as far as 1882 to a small Berlin suburb where an experiment display of this type of transport continued until 13th June 1882. After this there was very little, if any, progress across Europe, even though individual experiments were carried out in America. Next came a test line at the 1900 Paris Exhibition. Max Schiemann made great progress when in July 1901 he saw the first trolleybus able to carry passengers operate in Dresedn, Germany. Whilst the Bielathal system operated only until approximately 1904, Max had already developed what is now seen and classed as the definitive trolleybus collection system.

Bradford and Leeds were the first British cities to offer trolleybuses that could carry passengers in 1911. It wasn't until 1972 that Bradford ceased operating them. Altogether, 50 trolleybus routes operated in Britain, the largest being in London.
